Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Dr Yasmin Rasyid and Samuel Choong will shine a spotlight on sustainability in keynote addresses at next month’s Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF) Annual International Summit.
Featuring globally acclaimed speakers and panellists addressing the golf industry’s most pressing issues, the Summit is being staged at the Sime Darby Convention Centre on October 29-30.
Among the opening-day highlights will be a presentation from Dr Yasmin, General Manager, Sustainability, Sustainability at Sime Darby Property, whose responsibilities include building sustainable townships and implementing strategies that contribute high social impact and values to communities, while supporting and implementing decarbonisation efforts.
Achieving Carbon Neutrality at Clubs is the topic that will be discussed by Dr Yasmin, a sustainability scientist by profession, and an environmentalist by passion.
Continuing the theme of sustainability will be Choong, General Manager at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort.
In the final pre-lunch presentation, Choong will talk about the benefits of solar panels, a subject with which he is intimately familiar.
Tropicana Corporation Berhad has been installing solar panels across its developments in Malaysia as part of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments, beginning with the clubhouse at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort which installed over 2,200 panels between 2021 and 2022.
The company also plans to expand solar installations to other Tropicana-owned buildings and has incorporated solar-ready homes and solar-powered water heaters in developments.
Among other day one speakers at the Summit are Chris Gray, Head of Sustainable Golf & Agronomy, Asia-Pacific, The R&A and President of the AGIF, and Jessie Lu, Product Management & Marketing Manager, Asia for Club Car, who will focus on new technology and sustainability.
Owen Hester, President of Green Dynasty, will tackle the subject of Renovation Projects with presentations also from 59Club’s Chris Geraghty, Catalina Tapia from Golf Caddies, while the topic of Human Relations will be addressed by Guru Collective’s James Cronk and Mark Matahaere of Envoy Golf.
For golf course superintendents, there will also be specialist speakers, including Nizam Othman, Director of Agronomy at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, Els Club Desaru’s Farhana Hamzah, Evan Du Plessis of Sports Turf Solutions, Rain Bird’s Rob Weiks and Jalmari Talola of Soil Scout.
