A gold medallist at the 1982 Asian Games, Rishi is also a former All India Junior & All India Men’s Amateur champion who was the first Indian to play NCAA college golf in the United States.

He went on to play professionally and served as Honorary Secretary of the Indian Professional Golfers Association from 1989 to 1996.

Since then, he’s been a key figure in many areas of the Indian golf industry, including publishing, player management and event promotion and management.

As well as publishing Golf Digest India and penning more than 1,000 sports columns in Economic Times and Times of India, Rishi conceptualised and staged the India Golf Expo for five consecutive years, and sold and executed US$70 million in golf sponsorships in India.

In January of 2025, Rishi enjoyed a second successful stint as non-playing Captain of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation Bonallack Trophy team in the biennial Ryder Cup-style match play event against the European Golf Association in the United Arab Emirates.

Having cut his journalistic teeth in England, Spencer arrived in Hong Kong in 1984 to assume a position on the editorial staff at the South China Morning Post, where he became Chief Sports Writer and Deputy Sports Editor. Instrumental in the launching and running of the first golf magazine in Asia, Spencer moved to Singapore in 2002 and has continued to be a close observer of Asian sport, writing for many leading newspapers, magazines and websites and commentating for a variety of television channels, including ESPN, Fox Sports and Asia Television (Hong Kong).

In February of 2014, Spencer assumed the position as Chief Communications Officer with the Asian Golf Industry Federation. As well as sitting on various Awards panels, Spencer has acted as moderator at numerous high-profile conferences around the region, including the Asian Club Managers Conference (2018), All That Matters (2017), HSBC Golf Business Forum in Abu Dhabi (April, 2014), and as Master of Ceremonies at various golf tournaments, including The Championship (European Tour-Asia Tour) and Causeway Trophy.
