Flagstick Shaping Laos’ Golfing Landscape

Construction on Faldo Design’s Thatluang Golf Village began in April.

Vientiane, Laos:  Flagstick, the world’s leader in golf course construction management, is playing a significant role in shaping the future of golf in Laos.

While Savan Golf Resort’s nine-hole par-three course is set to be unveiled for preview play in September, Thatluang Golf Village’s 18-hole layout is expected to open in the third quarter of 2026.

The two venues will add to the growing list of golfing facilities in the Southeast Asian nation which is bordered by Myanmar and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the southeast and Thailand to the west and southwest.

Located in Savannakhet, Savan Golf Resort has been sculpted by Nicklaus Design, while Thatluang Golf Village, in the country’s booming capital of Vientiane, is the latest work of Faldo Design in the region.

Both projects are being managed by Flagstick Golf Course Construction Management.

Savan Golf Resort is being led by Hong Kong-based Century Group International, who set out to create an additional amenity for the newly acquired casino hotel.

The course will feature Stadium Zoysia on tees, rough and approaches, TifEagle bermuda on greens and bahia for outer rough, all supplied by Sports Turf Solutions. A Toro irrigation system was supplied by Jebsen & Jessen.

Meanwhile, Thatluang Golf Village is part of the Thatluang Lake Park, a new urban area in Vientiane designated as a special economic zone. Also referred to as Thatluang Marsh Specific Economic Zone, the area of 365 hectares is expected to accommodate up to 300,000 people. The development is centred around an ornamental lake.

Built on flat ‘flood’ land, 1.5 million cubic metres of soil was imported to raise the land for the golf course on which construction commenced in April.

In addition to its work in Laos, Flagstick remains at the forefront of golf course construction in the region with on-going projects in Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam.

“Flagstick is committed to delivering excellence and passion no matter the landscape. Each course is crafted with care, not just built,” said Flagstick President Martin Moore.
