Shaping Golf’s Future in ASEAN

Representatives from the nine member nations of the ASEAN Golf Federation met in Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The ASEAN Golf Federation (AGF) has pledged to continue fostering unity, enhancing the quality of the game, and ensuring the equitable distribution of opportunities across its member countries.

The AGF is made up of representatives from ruling national golfing bodies in Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Following its annual meeting in the Malaysian capital yesterday, an AGF spokesperson said: “Significant resolutions were set in motion that are poised to shape the future of golf in the region.

“In a notable decision to ensure equality and rotation in leadership roles, it was agreed that the position of the Secretary-General of the AGF would rotate among the member countries.

“In a further bid to promote unity, co-operation, and skill enhancement, the AGF has agreed to an exchange referee programme. This initiative will allow for sharing knowledge, experience, and best practices among the member countries.”

At the meeting, which was chaired by current AGF President Admiral Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor and conducted by Secretary-General Dato’ Zulkifli Ismail, the host countries for the next three editions of the Southeast Asian Amateur Golf Team Championships were confirmed.

The championships feature the Putra Cup and Lion City Cup for males and the Santi Cup and Kartini Cup for women.

In 2024, the championships will be staged in Singapore with Hong Kong acting as hosts in 2025, followed by Cambodia in 2026.

In a move to align with other major golfing events in the region, a new championship format was proposed, mirroring that of the Southeast (SEA) Games: three days of individual stroke play, followed by two days dedicated to team match play.

While the proposal was favourably received by attendees at the annual meeting, it was agreed that the delegates will seek final approval from their respective Board members.
