Troon, Scotland: In 2016 and for as long as records have been kept, Titleist was once again the number one ball at the Open Championship.
No fewer than 94 players in the starting field of 156 trusted a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball for their success at Royal Troon – more than five times the nearest competitor with 17 and more than all competitors combined.
Titleist was also the top choice among players in the hybrids (12) as well as the irons (34) categories.
Titleist Vokey Design Wedges also topped the approach, sand and lob wedge category with 122 wedges in play.
Among the players relying on a Titleist golf ball was defending Open champion, Zach Johnson (Pro V1x), who captured the Claret Jug last year at St Andrews.
As Johnson knows from his prior Open experiences, the weather always plays a factor in Scotland and the conditions can turn on a dime.
He said: “This is a tournament where you can see three or four seasons in 10, 11 holes. I think you just have to embrace it and accept it and maybe even appreciate it to a degree over here.
“The morning could be brutal and the afternoon could simmer down and vice-versa. You just don’t know. But you’ve got to be prepared for anything.”
