St Andrews, Scotland: Titleist Brand Ambassador Zach Johnson (Pro V1x) captured the second Major championship of his career, prevailing in an all-Pro V1x play-off with fellow Titleist Brand Ambassador Marc Leishman and Titleist golf ball loyalist Louis Oosthuizen at the 144th Open Championship.
“I feel blessed to be the champion,” Johnson told the crowd gathered around the first and 18th holes at the the Old Course. “I feel honoured to be part of the history of this game.
“To have my name on that trophy with the names that have come before me … it’s humbling and surreal.”
Titleist is part of the Acushnet company, a Full Business Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation.
Johnson got off to a fast start by posting an opening round of six-under-par 66 in challenging, windy conditions, as he was able to control his shots and focus on making solid contact.
“You’ve just got to try to hit that ball solid. Solid shots usually pan out,” said Johnson.
Johnson followed up with a two-under 70 second round and a 71 in the third round to remain in the hunt for the Claret Jug.
After starting the final round three shots off the lead, Johnson put together another impressive six-under 66 to finish for a 15-under-par 273 total to take the clubhouse lead and ultimately earn a spot in the four-hole aggregate play-off.
And though it took 76 holes to crown the champion, it was well worth the wait as Johnson went on to birdie the first two holes of the play-off and secure the win at the Home of Golf.
“It’s been a week of patience, a week of trust, a week of courage and bravery,” added Johnson. “I can’t play any better than what I did.”
The leaderboard was full of Titleist Brand Ambassadors and golf ball loyalists as seven of the 11 players who finished among the top 10 and ties relied upon Titleist golf balls, including Titleist Brand Ambassadors Jordan Spieth (T-4), Brooks Koepka (T-10) and Adam Scott (T-10).
At the 144th Open Championship, 91 players put their trust in a Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball. That’s more than four times the nearest competitor with 21 and more than all competitors combined.
Titleist also led the field in the irons (46) category and Titleist Vokey Design wedges were the top choice among players in the approach, sand and lob wedge category with 137.
