Shanghai, China: Fresh from helping China win golf’s women’s team gold medal at the 20th Asian Games, Yin Ruoning delighted her home fans by winning the Buick LPGA Shanghai.
A fortnight after her Asiad exploits in Japan, where she also won an individual silver medal, Yin produced a thrilling come-from-behind victory at Sheshan International Golf Club.
Two shots off the pace heading into the final round, Yin closed with a four-under 68. Her 11-under aggregate of 277 was one shot clear of overnight leader Choi Hye-jin of Korea. Amy Yang, also of Korea, was a further two strokes back in third.
Yin, who clinched her seventh LPGA Tour title, said: “The fans are amazing. They’re rooting for me no matter if I play bad or good. They’re just always cheering for me, which I really appreciate.”
Yin, whom also won the Shanghai event in 2024, was not the only China player in the spotlight. Following on from her historic triumph in last week’s Women’s China Open, 16-year-old Liu Yujie ended in a share of 26th place on three-over 291.
She finished ahead of the three other Chinese amateurs in the starting line-up – Meng Ziyan (tied 58th, 300), Cui Jinghan (tied 69th, 304) and Xi Ningyao (75th, 319).
Defending champion Atthaya ‘Jeeno’ Thitikul of Thailand, closed with a 69 to finish tied for eighth at three-under. The inaugural Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific champion in 2018, Jeeno won the LOTTE Championship in Hawaii last week for her fourth LPGA victory of the season and 11th overall.
The late-season Asian Swing on the LPGA Tour continues with the BMW Ladies Championship at Pine Beach Golf Links in Korea next week followed by the Maybank Championship at Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
