Manila, Philippines: The Philippines Irrigation Symposium highlighted the increasingly critical role modern irrigation plays in delivering high‑performance, sustainable golf course environments, bringing together leaders in course management, construction, design, and irrigation.

Speakers at Ayala Greenfield Estates in Calamba addressed irrigation’s influence across the full golf course lifecycle – from planning and construction to daily operations, maintenance, and long‑term performance – underscoring its role as a strategic system rather than a supporting utility.

Mark Donohue, Regional Manager of Rain Bird Southeast Asia, served as Master of Ceremonies, guiding discussions and reinforcing the role of irrigation as a key driver of agronomic performance, operational efficiency, and long‑term asset value.

The symposium featured a series of presentations offering practical and strategic insights into modern irrigation delivery:

  • Owen Hester, Green Dynasty, highlighted the importance of early planning and construction sequencing, positioning irrigation as a critical enabler of project efficiency and on‑time delivery.
  • Jim Wagner, Curley-Wagner Golf Design, reinforced that irrigation is not an add‑on, but a core architectural system that directly influences playability, turf consistency, and design integrity.
  • Rob Weiks, Rain Bird Southeast Asia, delivered a live demonstration of CirrusPRO, showcasing advanced capabilities such as Spectrum TDR 350 Moisture Metre integration, real‑time system feedback, and precision irrigation control.
  • RJ Escano, Aqua Terra, presented the company’s ‘pump station to rotor’ methodology, outlining a fully integrated approach to irrigation delivery. He highlighted Aqua Terra’s role as a one‑stop irrigation solutions provider in the Philippines, supporting projects from system design and supply through installation, commissioning, and after‑sales service – helping ensure system compatibility, operational efficiency, and long‑term reliability.

A clear consensus emerged throughout the symposium: modern irrigation systems are fundamental to delivering superior agronomic performance, operational efficiency, and consistent playing conditions.

Key themes included:

  • Precision water application: Delivering the right amount of water, at the right time, in the right location.
  • Consistent playability: Supporting uniform turf conditions across all playing surfaces.
  • Operational efficiency: Reducing manual intervention and improving day‑to‑day decision‑making.
  • Resource optimisation: Maximising water use while minimising waste.

Rain Bird systems are designed to move beyond basic irrigation by enabling data‑driven control, system‑wide visibility, and proactive decision‑making. Through central control platforms, integrated diagnostics, and advanced rotor performance, golf courses can transition from reactive watering to more intelligent, performance‑driven irrigation management.

The symposium also addressed a key industry transition – the shift from manual and satellite‑based irrigation systems towards centralised, data‑driven control.

Rain Bird’s approach focuses on:

  • Supporting this transition without unnecessary complexity.
  • Demonstrating clear, real‑world operational benefits.
  • Aligning technology with the current challenges faced by course managers.
  • This ensures solutions such as CirrusPRO are recognised not only as advanced technology platforms, but as practical tools that enhance daily operations and support long‑term course performance.
