After sterling service at the Hong Kong Golf Club, Ian Gardner and Andy Kwok have stood down from their roles as General Manager and Club Captain respectively.

Hong Kong SAR, China: Ian Gardner has retired after almost 12 years as General Manager at the Hong Kong Golf Club (HKGC), among Asia’s most revered golfing institutions.

Succeeding him in one of the most high-profile roles in golf club management in Asia is Daniel O’Neill, who joined the HKGC as Head Professional in 2010 and was promoted to Director of Golf in late 2021.

Originally from Melbourne, O’Neill graduated with a Bachelor of Business degree in 2002 before earning his Australian PGA credentials in 2003. His first club pro experience came at Surfers Paradise Golf Club in Queensland that year.

After four years on the Gold Coast, O’Neill moved to Indonesia in 2006, where he assumed the post as Head Professional at Jagorawi Golf & Country Club in Bogor.

Also standing down at Fanling after serving a record term of four years as Captain is Andy Kwok. Bryant Lu, who has acted as Kwok’s deputy for the last four years, will head up the 2026-2027 General Committee with Patrick Kwan as his Vice-Captain.

Gardner initially moved to Hong Kong in 1983 as a Senior Inspector at the Royal Hong Kong Police. He joined the HKGC in November 2014, bringing with him over 35 years of club management experience at prestigious private, semi-private, and public golf clubs, country clubs, and resorts across Southeast Asia, South Africa, the Middle East, and the United States including Nicklaus Club Beijing, Hidden Tiger Golf Club, Abu Dhabi Golf Club and The Orchard Golf & Country Club.

During his tenure at Fanling, Gardner oversaw 10 Hong Kong Opens, three Hong Kong Ladies Opens, an Aramco Team Series, a National Games of China Championship and three LIV Hong Kong events. His leadership ensured seamless delivery of major international tournaments while preserving the club’s rich heritage and maintaining exceptional standards in course conditioning and member services.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Gardner said: “It has been an eventful 11 years. It’s been an absolute honour to work alongside our wonderful team of employees at Fanling who have worked so hard.”

A statement from the HKGC said: “Both Ian and Andy have made incredible contributions to the club during their tenure and we cannot thank them enough for their leadership and commitment.”

Meanwhile, David Baron has succeeded O’Neill as Director of Golf, with Daniel Harrison promoted to Head Professional.

Englishman Baron, a PGA of Great Britain & Ireland professional who was on the club’s golf operations team from 2007 to 2010, has recently relocated from Cambodia, where he held the position of General Manager at Angkor Golf Resort.

Reflecting on his return to Fanling, Baron said: “It is both an honour and a privilege to return to the Hong Kong Golf Club in the role of Director of Golf. This club holds a special place in my professional journey, and I have always admired its heritage, traditions and commitment to excellence.

“I am passionate about delivering exceptional member and guest experiences through attention to detail, consistency and genuine hospitality. I very much look forward to working closely with the team, membership and committees to uphold the proud standards of the club while contributing positively to its continued success.”

Harrison, who joined the HKGC in 2021, has been a British PGA Member since 2015. “He has become an extremely popular addition to the Golf Operations department and is very well liked among the membership. I am sure he will do an excellent job in his new role working alongside David and the rest of the team,” said outgoing Captain Kwok.

Comprising three acclaimed golf courses – the Old Course (opened in 1911), the New Course (1931) and the Eden Course (1970) – as well as a heritage cluster of historical buildings including the clubhouse (1914) and Old Course Halfway House (1916), the Fanling venue has been commended by UNESCO for enhancing heritage interpretation, its environmental stewardship, landscape conservation and community outreach endeavours.
