Kediri, East Java, Indonesia: Flagstick has completed construction on the Curley-Wagner Golf Design Dhoho Surya Golf Course, the newest addition to Indonesia’s golf course offerings.

Set in the foothills of the Gunung Liman Mountains, the course is characterised by dramatic elevation changes and includes an abandoned quarry that frames the par-three 16th and driveable par-four 17th.

Boasting stunning views of the surrounding mountain ranges, the course routing has used existing valleys to create meandering water features that interact with the golf strategy.

The construction teams successfully completed the project after battling through a challenging wet season, with more than 4.2 metres of rain recorded in 12 months.

To deal with the extreme rainfall, Flagstick specified and managed the installation of over 60,000 LM (linear metres) of Flat Pipe sub-drainage system throughout the course, including all greens, tees and fairways.

Flagstick Founder and President Martin Moore said: “At Flagstick, we always carefully select and recommend the best solutions for our clients, such as specifying the use of a ‘no dig’ Flat Pipe sub-drainage system at Dhoho Surya Golf Course due to the challenging soil and site conditions.

“This method greatly improved construction efficiencies and enabled us to continue the construction through all times of the year. The course drains very well and playing conditions are proving to be exceptional as a result.”

The course features generously wide fairways with undulating greens and approaches. Sports Turf Solutions (STS) supplied Zeon Zoysia which has come into its own to provide firm and fast ground ball options, despite the extreme rainfall. Greens have been planted with Primo Zoysia.

Gavin Reid, Vice President and Partner at Flagstick, said: “We are very proud of our team’s efforts and the end result at Dhoho Surya Golf Club. The project presented many challenges from its rocky terrain with quite extreme elevation changes requiring careful construction to preserve and enhance natural features wherever possible. That included using the on-site rock to produce some incredible rock wall features throughout the course.”

Other project team members included, Cadsult Irrigation Design, STS, Toro/Jebsen & Jessen and Rock Group.

Flagstick continues to play a key role in golf course development and renovations around the region with on-going projects in Vietnam, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Laos, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia.
