Singapore: The International Golf Federation (IGF), in collaboration with the Singapore Golf Association (SGA), has announced a complete set of sustainability initiatives for the 2025 World Amateur Team Championships (WATC), currently being hosted at the Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC).
This global event is not only showcasing elite amateur golf, but also serving as a model for environmental responsibility in sports.
These initiatives are a key part of the IGF Sustainability Roadmap, developed in close collaboration with Sustainable Golf, a global leader in advancing sustainability in sport. The expertise of these partners has been instrumental in shaping and implementing impactful actions that align with international best practices.
Key Sustainability Highlights
Certified Sustainable Venue: TMCC is GEO Certified, meeting the highest international standards for sustainable golf course operations.
Eco-Conscious Catering: Clubhouse dining menus feature local, organic, vegetarian, and vegan options. Caterers are using bio-degradable or recyclable containers and eliminating single-use disposables, offering reusable tableware with designated Return Points.
Plastic-Free Event: The WATC is PET-free, with reusable water bottles provided to all players, volunteers, staff, and referees. Water dispensers are available throughout the venue and will remain as a legacy installation.
Food Waste Reduction: A food donation programme has been implemented to support local food banks and eliminate waste.
Green Transportation: IGF is consolidating athletes, staff and guest transportation during the championships, reducing shuttle bus frequency and even suspending the service for a few hours each day, while also promoting public transport to reduce emissions.
Digital-First Approach: The event is prioritising digital and reusable materials, minimising printing and the use of single-use items reducing the overall waste.
Nature Restoration Projects: In partnership with TMCC and under the Sport for Nature framework, TMCC in collaboration with IGF, is installing birdhouses to support the nesting and conservation of endemic bird species.
Carbon Tracking & Compensation: IGF is tracking and measuring the event’s carbon footprint, with plans to implement compensation projects to achieve a future net-positive environmental impact.
To ensure transparency and continuous improvement, IGF will publish a comprehensive 2025 World Amateur Team Championships Sustainability Report in December. This report will detail the environmental impact of the event, and the effectiveness of the initiatives implemented.
The data collected will serve as a foundation to support and enhance sustainability efforts for future editions of the WATC, reinforcing IGF’s long-term commitment to responsible golf.
Antony Scanlon, Executive Director of the International Golf Federation, said: “These initiatives reflect our deep commitment to sustainability and our belief that sport can be a powerful force for environmental good. With the guidance and support of Sustainable Golf, we are embedding sustainability into every aspect of the 2025 WATC and beyond.”
