Singapore: From a barren land into a supremely environmental-friendly golf courses. That is Tanah Merah Country Club’s (TMCC) Garden and Tampines courses, which have been recognised for their preservation of bio-diversity and promotion of sustainable practices.
The prize for that: the awarding of the GEO Certified accreditation by the Golf Environment Organisation, a high-profile body in Scotland which selects golf courses for accreditation for ticking all boxes when it concerns the environment.
Tanah Merah joins an esteemed group of golf clubs worldwide recognised for advancing sustainable development and practices.
A Tanah Merah Country Club spokesperson said: “Being GEO Certified signifies that our golf courses have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.
“Administered by Scotland-based GEO Foundation, the award is a comprehensive modern certification, developed to the highest credibility standard, to help golf facilities, developments and tournaments demonstrate and be recognised for their environmental and social responsibility.”
Located on Singapore’s East Coast, TMCC has transformed from open wasted land into a thriving habitat that now houses a rich variety of flora and fauna. The club is home to abundant species of animals, reflecting its dedication to preserving bio-diversity and with the awarding of promoting sustainable practices.
One key significant milestone in the sustainability journey was the completion of the Solar Panel Installation Project at the Tampines Course in 2023, marking a major step towards reducing the carbon footprint and integrating clean energy solutions into the operations.
Additionally, the Garden Course Solar Panel Installation project is underway and is set to be completed soon, further enhancing the club’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental stewardship.
“In land-scarce cities, like Singapore, it is crucial to recognise how golf courses can be a powerful force for good. Beyond offering recreational spaces, golf courses provide valuable eco-system services, support wildlife conservation, and promote health and well-being for Members and guests of all ages.
“Golf courses also contribute to job creation and generate economic value through local supply chains. By harnessing this potential, TMCC aspires to evolve into not just a place of golf and leisure, but also catalysts for positive social and environmental change,” added the TMCC spokesperson.
In his assessment for certification, Brad Revill, the GEO accredited independent verifier, said of the Tampines Course: “An impressively well-maintained facility with excellent turf quality, surrounding nature. I look forward to seeing the tree-planting plan and wetland habitat projects progress.”
As for the Garden Course, he said: “As the name suggests, the Garden Course is a beautiful property surrounded by nature with tropical landscaping throughout the course. The golf course has huge potential for the creation of large natural habitats, and I look forward to seeing the initiatives the club has planned.”
Looking ahead, the club will continue to explore and implement more sustainable practices in its operations, ensuring that its development aligns with environmental stewardship and contributes positively to the surrounding eco-system.
TMCC President Ronald Ong said: “TMCC is incredibly proud to have earned the prestigious GEO Certified accreditation for both the Garden Course and Tampines Course. This achievement reflects our continued commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Achieving this accreditation marks another significant milestone in our journey, as we recognise our role in combating climate change.
“We will continue to prioritise eco-friendly initiatives, such as our solar panel projects, ensuring a positive and lasting impact on both our operations and the environment.”
TMCC General Manager Elliott Gray said: “TMCC takes great pride in leading the way in renewable energy and environmental stewardship. Building on this success, we are now devising ways to further engage with our stakeholders to identify and deliver additional sustainable benefits for our community.
“Attaining this international accreditation underscores the exceptional team effort behind the wide range of practical, social, and environmental initiatives that are being implemented across our club operations and beyond.”
