Singapore: Teenage prodigy Sydnie Ng will be seeking to extend her good run of form in this week’s EFG-CLPGQ series at the Laguna National Golf Resort Club.
The two-day event (September 16-17) offers S$10,000 prize money to the top 10 players and ties, including amateurs, and provides World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.
It is a qualifying pathway to the flagship China LPGA Tour where former world number one and Major winner Yin Ruoning won her first three tournaments as a professional.
Touted as one of the brightest talents in Singapore golf, 13-year-old Ng, a Grade 7 student at St Joseph’s Institution International, finished fourth overall and second in Division ‘B’ at last month’s Yonex Junior Championship in Japan.
Ng said: “I’m very happy with the result. Firstly, Division ‘B’ is 15 years old and under, many players are technically and physically stronger. Secondly, it was my first time competing in Japan and it was a pleasant surprise that I managed to achieve this result against such a strong field.”
The championship provides top juniors from around the world with the opportunity for further success, offering the winners of the Junior High and High School girls’ divisions a place at the Yonex Ladies Championship on the Japan LPGA Tour. The runners-up earn a spot at the Yonex Ladies Qualifiers.
Ng, discovered through the Singapore Junior Development Tour (SJDT), demonstrated her talent when she won the Future Champions Golf (FCG) World Championship in California last year, putting her in illustrious company alongside Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn, a two-time Major winner, and 2021 ANA Inspiration winner Patty Tavatanakit, and Japanese Yuka Saso, a two-time US Women’s Open champion.
Asked about her expectations for the EFG-CLPGQ series, Ng said: “I did not prepare myself well mentally for the last Q Series in May. This time around, I hope I can stick to my game plan, and try to stay calm, no matter what happens.”
The 54-hole tournament will accommodate a field of up to 72 players, with a maximum of 18 participants from mainland China. Participants will play a gruelling 36-hole golf marathon on the first day, with only the top 50 players and ties advancing to the third and final round.
Passion Hsu, a 14-year-old member of the Singapore Golf Association (SGA) junior national squad, who finished second at the 47th Royal Selangor Golf Club Championship Ladies Amateur Open in July, has also confirmed her entry for the EFG-CLPGA series.
With live streaming available via the CLPGQ Series app, US college coaches can track players’ performances, opening doors for potential recruitment opportunities.
Meanwhile, Laguna National has also been confirmed as the venue for the Singapore qualifier for next month’s Hengdian Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Championship.
Modelled after the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the October 8 event will consist of the top 60 players from the China Tour, who will be paired with an amateur, who include famous Chinese celebrities and high-profile corporate CEOs.
Promoted by LLD Sports, the Singapore qualifier for the Hengdian Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Championship is open to amateurs of all nationalities above 21 years of age. Two winners will get an all-expenses trip to Hengdian.
