Lawrence, Kansas, United States: Andrew Johnston has received recognition for his role in the environmental efforts undertaken at Sentosa Golf Club.
General Manager and Director of Agronomy at the award-winning Singapore venue, Johnston was named as second runner-up in the Healthy Land Stewardship Award, part of the 2021 Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards (ELGA).
The awards are presented annually by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and Golf Digest in partnership with Syngenta, an Executive Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation.
Johnston, a Board Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation, was among eight runners-up to receive recognition for their environmental efforts.
The Healthy Land Stewardship Award recognises effective strategies for efficient use of pesticides and nutrients, as well as pollution prevention.
The winner of that category was Cortland Winkle, Superintendent at Four Seasons Resort and Club in Irving, Texas.
First runner-up was Matt Gourlay, Director of Golf Course Management at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kansas.
The awards have recognised superintendents and golf courses around the world for their commitment to environmental stewardship since 1993, but in 2018 the ELGAs were updated to recognise more superintendents in more focused areas of environmental sustainability.
Instead of offering national awards based on facility type, the newer version of the ELGAs is based on the environmental best management practices and honour specific areas of focus.
Johnston was the only 2021 award winner from outside the United States.
