Bangkok, Thailand: There’s just no stopping Thai teenage sensation Saranporn Langkulgasettrin.
The talented 17-year-old snared an eagle-three at the penultimate hole en route to claiming a one-stroke victory in the PTT Thailand LPGA Masters. It was her sixth title of the year.
The four million baht (about US$120,000) tournament was tri-sanctioned by the China, Australian and Thai LPGAs. For Saranporn, the victory was worth 600,000 baht (about US$18,000) and follows on from her previous successes in 2017 in Wuhan, Zhuhai, Chinese Taipei and two titles on the Thai Tour.
Thanks to her late eagle, Saranporn signed off with a one-under-par 71. That gave her a three-day total of five-under 211 at Panya Indra Golf Club.
On a Thai-dominated leaderboard, Budsabakorn Sukapan (68), Parinda Phokan (71) and Ploychompoo Wirairungruen (72) were equal runners-up. Compatriots Renuka Suksukont (71) and PK Kongkraphan (72) were joint fifth with Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yu-ju (73) two shots back.
After starting the day two shots off the lead, Saranporn, the first-round leader, made a birdie on the first hole to get to five-under before registering four bogeys and another birdie to make the turn in 38. The lead changed hands several times between Ploychompoo and Budsabakorn before Saranporn made her move with a birdie at the 497-yard par-five 12th.
Playing conservative golf in the hot and windy conditions, Saranporn parred the next four holes before taking control of her destiny at the 500-yard 17th.
Following a super drive, the Phuket native required just a seven-iron downwind to reach the putting surface in two. Her ball came to rest 13 feet from the flag. Making light of the pressure, she duly rolled home the left-to-right putt for a three.
Overnight leader Chatprapa Siriprakob finished equal eighth after stumbling to a 76, while Zhang Yunjie (70) was the top mainland Chinese player in a share of 13th place, five shots off the winning score.
