Singapore: For the second year in succession, Jonathan Wijono produced a true master-class at Laguna National’s Masters Course.
Three weeks before his 16th birthday, the highly-rated Indonesian teenager had cause to celebrate after recording an impressive wire-to-wire victory in the sixth edition of the Mizuno – Laguna National Junior Golf Championship.
Over three days on a layout at which he feels perfectly at home, Wijono hardly put a foot wrong as he negotiated his way around the Masters Course like a veteran with rounds of 68, 69 and 70.
That added up to a 54-hole aggregate of six-under 207 – and an 11-stroke winning margin from compatriot Jose Suryadinata in the elite event that is included in The R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and which attracted a record field of 80 players from five countries.
It also meant that Wijono had the distinction of retaining the title he captured for the first time in 2015 at Laguna National, a Golf Course Facility Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation.
Completing a memorable week for a powerful Indonesian contingent, 15-year-old Patricia Sinolungan claimed top honours among the girls.
Having followed an opening 72 with an even-par 71, Sinolungan signed off in style with a four-under-par 67 that she described as the best round of her life.
Wijono and Sinolungan both had fulsome praise for the Masters Course.
Wijono, who hails from Surabaya and is a member of the Taman Dayu Golf Club & Resort, said: “I really like the set-up at Laguna National. The course was in good condition and the greens were in excellent shape. I also enjoyed the weather conditions. It was not as humid as we are used to.”
Sinolungan, who plays her golf at Damai Indah’s Bumi Serpong Course in Jakarta, also praised the consistency of the putting surfaces which were running to 9.0 on the Stimpmeter, the device used to measure the speed of the greens.
“I found the greens very true which gave me confidence and I made a lot of putts. The course is not easy. There are a lot of bunkers and water hazards and you have to manage your game well,” said the 15-year-old high school student, who was making her competitive tournament debut in Singapore.

It was a third significant success in a short space of time for Wijono, the second highest rated Indonesian on the WAGR. In September he won the Indonesian National Games, while November saw him add the Indonesian Amateur Open to his rapidly growing collection of titles.
Desmond Kim, victorious in the Laguna National Match Play Championship and Faldo Series Singapore Championship, had to settle for second place in the Boys’ A Division (15-17 years), behind Warren Golf & Country Club’s Donovan Lee Zhi Peng.
Other divisional winners were Indonesian Suryadinata (Boys’ B Division) and Singapore Island Country Club members Riya Ahuja (Girls’ A Division) and Margaret Fernandez (Girls’ B Division).
Prizes were presented by Mark Bates, Laguna National’s Director of Golf Operations, and Mizuno Singapore General Manager David Leow. Also in attendance were senior figures from Royal Sporting House.
