Gurgaon, India: Momentum is gathering ahead of next month’s fifth edition of the India Golf Expo (IGE).
With an aim to increase the focus and grow the potential of golf in India, the Indian Golf Industry Association (IGIA) is hosting the IGE with support from the Indian Golf Union (IGU) and Golf Course Superintendents & Managers Association of India (GCSMAI).
Returning to DLF Club 5 on April 20-21, the IGE is India’s largest congregation of golf industry experts, charting the roadmap for Indian golf.
The show dates and agenda were announced at an industry lunch attended by the Shri. Suman, Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism along with captains of the leading golf clubs in India, golf tour operators, real estate developers and teaching professionals.
Shri. Suman Billa said: “Golf tourism has not been exploited to its true potential as at present India gets very miniscule tourism income that can be attributable to golf.
“The Ministry is very keen on promoting golf for the development of the overall eco-system of tourism and would like to emulate the success of neighbouring countries like Thailand, Malaysia and the UAE.
“The Ministry of Tourism is developing a separate section as part of the Incredible India website that would feature some of the best golf courses and become a repository for details about various facilities.
“The new tourism policy has been submitted to the Honourable Prime Minister and suggests creation of a ‘Golf Tourism Promotion Board’ to drive growth of golf in India. We will also be focusing on marketing and advertising of tourist-focused golf events and become more tourist friendly.”
Aakash Ohri, President of the IGIA and Executive Director, Business Development, DLF Home Developers Limited, said: “The India Golf Expo is a way of representing India’s presence in the global golf industry. At present golf is still in a nascent stage of its development. Currently, there are about 15 courses under construction across India and 50 new courses will be built in the near future. However, we have to take insights from the success of golf in China and the United States and replicate the same in India.”
The 2016 edition of India Golf Expo has seen a 40% growth in the exhibition booking space compared to last year.
