Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Jessica Korda’s six-under-par 65 in the final round of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia finally delivered the American her long-awaited win after more than a year-long title drought.
The 22-year-old started the day on 12-under-par and maintained her lead over the chasing pack, firing four birdies on the front nine and three on the back with a bogey on the par-four 11th.
She amassed a four-day total of 18-under-par 266 (69-67-65-65) over the East Course at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club [KLGCC], a Golf Facility Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation.
Korda ended four shots clear of three players – world number two Lydia Ko (71-65-68-66), defending champion and world number seven Feng Shanshan (66-69-69-66) and world number three Stacy Lewis (72-66-65-67).
“I knew that I was getting really close and just needed to stay patient. That’s all my caddie was telling me. He was on me all week about staying patient. So it’s an incredible feeling,” said Korda, who credited her caddie Kyle Bradley as her biggest support and critic on-course.
Malaysia’s highest-ranked player Kelly Tan was the best-placed local, finishing on five-over 289 (70-74-74-71) for solo 61st spot.
Steven Thielke, KLGCC’s General Manager and Chairman of the Tournament Committee, said: “Our congratulations to Jessica on a well-played tournament and a great win. She has played some excellent golf over four days and closed out the tournament in very impressive style. We look forward to seeing her back at KLGCC next year.
“On behalf of Sime Darby and KLGCC I would like to extend my thanks to all the players and spectators for making the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2015 such a successful event. We have witnessed world-class golf on the bcourse and some great entertainment off it. We look forward to seeing the tournament return in 2016.”
Speaking on behalf of the tournament promoter, Grant Slack, Senior Vice President of IMG Golf, added: “The sixth edition of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia has, once again, provided four days of first-class entertainment for everybody that has made their way to KLGCC. We congratulate Jessica on a very well deserved win. Faced with extremely stiff competition, she showed the characteristics of a true champion.
“I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Sime Darby for their continued support of this tournament, as well as all the tournament sponsors and event partners. Once again the bar has been raised and we look forward to returning next year.”
