Singapore: Lucius Toh Zheng Xian and James Leow Kwang Aik will lock horns once more in what promises to be an intriguing showdown at this week’s Faldo Series Singapore Championship.
In a thrilling head-to-head contest last year, national squad member Toh held off a strong final-day charge from Leow to claim a tense one-stroke victory.
This time, Leow will be looking to turn the tables on his fellow 17-year-old when they renew their friendly rivalry over the next three days in the 54-hole World Amateur Golf Ranking stroke play event.
A total of 52 players between the ages of 12 and 17 will tee-off at Jurong Country Club in what is the 13th leg of the record-breaking 2014-15 Faldo Series Asia season.
The overall winner will be rewarded with a starting spot in the ninth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final to be staged at Mission Hills in Shenzhen next March.
Also receiving an invitation to participate in the China showpiece that will be hosted by Sir Nick Faldo are the winners of the Boys’ Division and Girls’ Division respectively.
Among the leading lights expected to challenge Toh and Leow in the boys’ category are Leonard Tee Zhi Xian, Ryan Wong Wey Ren and Desmond Kim, all members of Singapore’s national development squad.
Meanwhile, Ashley Leanne Loh is aiming to improve on her runner-up finish in the girls’ segment last year with Sarah Tan and Jacqueline Young likely to prove her closest rivals.
Six-time Major championship winner Sir Nick, Britain’s most successful golfer, said: “I will be following closely the scores from the Faldo Series Singapore Championship and look forward to welcoming the winners to Mission Hills next year.”
Supported by The R&A, ISPS and Mission Hills and endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, the 2014-15 Faldo Series Asia campaign stretches over 11 months and is made up of a minimum of 20 championships.
