Shenzhen, China: A total of 1,987 golfers made history at Mission Hills Shenzhen-Dongguan by taking part in the biggest single-day golf tournament in history.
The event featured golf lovers from around the world of all ages and abilities who turned the giant integrated resort into a hive of activity.
The spectacular gathering – marking 22 years since building work started on the first course at Mission Hills – was officially accredited as ‘The World’s Largest One-Day Golf Tournament’ by Guinness World Records. Charles Wharton, Head of Records Management Team for Greater China at Guinness World Records, was on hand to verify the new record and he presented a confirmation certificate to Tenniel Chu, Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Group, during the post-tournament prize-giving ceremony. “We would like to congratulate everyone involved in this historic celebration of golf, from the dedicated players who took part with such tremendous enthusiasm to the hundreds of Mission Hills staff who displayed great expertise and knowledge in organising it,” said Chu. “Mission Hills continues to be a pioneering force in Chinese sports and leisure and a record-setting leader in the world of golf. We look forward to staging more world-beating events at our resorts in the coming months and years.” In addition, the ‘Golf World Record Challenge’ was for a worthy cause, with a proportion of players’ enrolment fees going towards junior golf development. Organisers utilised nine of the 12 courses at Mission Hills Shenzhen-Dongguan for the record attempt with separate rounds in the morning and afternoon. The tournament was played on the World Cup, Vijay, Ozaki and Els courses at Shenzhen and the Norman, Annika, Olazábal, Leadbetter and Rose-Poulter courses at Dongguan, with shotgun starts at 7:30 am and 1:30 pm. The tournament broke the previous world record set on June 25, 2010, also at Mission Hills Shenzhen-Dongguan. On that occasion 1,562 players took part in a single-day tournament. Mission Hills Shenzhen-Dongguan resort is accredited by Guinness World Records as ‘The World’s Largest Golf Club’ while Mission Hills Haikou on the tropical island of Hainan is recognised as ‘The World’s Largest Spa Resort’.
