Singapore: Each and every individual has the capacity to influence those around them and instigate change for good.

That’s the belief of Suzy Whaley, one of the most prominent female figures in the golfing industry for more than 30 years.

“You don’t have to be the President of the PGA of America to make dramatic change,” said Whaley, speaking during the first episode of the Asian Golf Industry Federation’s (AGIF) Women in Sports series of interviews.

She said: “You can make change where you are, right in your community because that’s the most impactful. You have the power to do that.

“I tell people all the time that being a leader is just empowering other people to succeed. To do that I have a little mantra of my own which is something I’d advise – just be kind, be over prepared and bring joy to your every day.

“When that happens, opportunity will explode for you. Please note that you can make a difference right where you are. You just have to start wanting to do it.”

As the first female President of the PGA of America, Whaley strove to make a difference, becoming a role model for women and not only those with aspirations of securing leadership positions.

She said: “For anybody that’s looking to be a leader, to be a part of making a difference, we have that opportunity every day in the golf profession. That’s why I do what I do, because I have a chance to change somebody’s life every day.”
